David Angus has just extended his contract as the Music Director of Boston Lyric Opera for a further 3 years, taking him through the 2026/27 Season, in a key role on the company’s leadership team and as its principal conductor.  He remains based with his family in the UK when he is not directly involved at BLO.

His current season in Boston began with a striking new production of Madama Butterfly, followed by a highly acclaimed La Cenerentola, and has just finished with Joseph Bologne’s Anonymous Lover.  When in Boston David Angus has a presence in the local musical community and works with various orchestras and choral groups, particularly with the many conservatoire and university students preparing for careers in opera. Later this year he will be back in the recording studio with the London Philharmonic, with whom he has given countless concerts over the years, for another CD of modern American music.

David Angus started out as Chorus Master and Staff Conductor for Glyndebourne Festival Opera, both in the Festival and on tour, where he conducted many performances and concerts.  His operatic career then took him to Italy, primarily to conduct in Turin, but also in Milan, Bologna and Modena. In Britain he worked at Scottish Opera, Opera North and English Touring Opera, as well as conducting several British premieres for the Brighton Festival. Prior to his current BLO position, he was the Music Director of Glimmerglass Opera. He has appeared with the Canadian Opera Company, Cleveland Opera, Opéra National de Paris, Hawaii Opera Theatre, Danish National Opera, Malmö Opera and Icelandic Opera. More recently, he returned to Wexford Opera, and he made his debut with the Royal Opera in Stockholm with a hugely successful new production of Sweeney Todd, directed by Artistic Director Michael Cavanagh.

David Angus has led orchestras and choirs all over Europe, particularly in Scandinavia where he has been a regular guest with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra and several Danish orchestras. He was Chief Conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of Flanders for many years, and played a major part in establishing it as one of the most exciting and dynamic orchestras in the country. He still enthusiastically returns to this orchestra, most recently for the world premiere of “Symphony of Trees”, a major choral and orchestral work by Piet Swerts. Recent highlights have included the Toscanini Orchestra in Parma, the Porto SymphonyOrchestra, and a return to the Hong Kong Philharmonic.

He has conducted most of the major orchestras in Great Britain including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Hallé Orchestra, most of the BBC orchestras, and many concerts and recordings with the London Mozart Players and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. In North America he conducted the Utah Symphony, the San Antonio Symphony and the Calgary Philharmonic.

Born in England, of Danish and English parentage, David Angus spent his early years in Belfast.  He was a boy chorister at King's College, Cambridge, under Sir David Willcocks, and he read music at Surrey University.  He finished his training with a Fellowship in Conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where he won several prizes for his opera conducting.May 2020
